El 5 de Octubre de 1973, salía a la venta el séptimo álbum de estudio de Elton John, titulado “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road”. Sin duda el mejor trabajo de su carera musical. Era un LP doble y en la Cara A del disco 1, en el tercer track estaba “Bennie and the Jets”. Una de mis canciones favoritas “ever”. En esa Cara A, estaba “Funeral for a Friend / Love Lies Bleeding” (brutal) y “Candle in the Wind” ¡Casi nada!
Posteriormente, el 4 de Febrero de 1974, “Bennie and the Jets” se publicaría como un single, con la canción “Harmony” en el lado B.
De qué va la letra
El tema, como era costumbre por aquellos años, fue compuesto por Bernie Taupin y Elton John. Trata de una banda de música ficticia de la que el que la cantante es fan. Según Taupin, la letra es una sátira sobre la música de la década de los 70. “La codicia y el brillo de la escena musical de principios de la década de 1970 están representados por las palabras de Taupin” (ver letra completa al final):
We”ll kill the fatted calf tonight, so stick around,
you”re gonna hear electric music, solid walls of sound.
Algo así como:
“Mataremos al ternero gordo esta noche, así que quédate
vas a escuchar música eléctrica, paredes sólidas de sonido”.
Otro dato curioso es que Elton, rara vez canta la versión original de estudio y cada interpretación tiene desde ligeros a radicales cambios. Más adelante podrán escuchar una versión en vivo de este tema
Lugar de grabación
Como todas las canciones de “Goodbye Yellow Brickroad”, “Bennie and the Jets” fue grabada en el “Château d”Hérouville”s Strawberry Studios” (Francia), en donde habían grabado ya sus dos discos anteriores, “Honky Château” y “Don”t Shoot Me I”m Only the Piano Player”. El doble LP fue producido por Gus Dudgeon.
