Dire Straits – Sultans of Swing (1978)
“Sultans of Swing”, fue publicada cono un sencillo en Mayo de 1978, como un adelanto del primer LP de estudio de la banda titulado “Dire Straits“, que saldría a la venta el 7 de Octubre del mismo año.
Compuesta por Mark Knopfler, fue grabada por primera vea en Julio de 1977, como un demo. La letra y el título, se inspiraron en la actuación de una banda de jazz que tocaba en la esquina de un pub casi vacío en Deptford, al sur de Londres. Esta banda se llamaba “Sultans of Swing”, según anunciaba su líder al final de la sesión.
El vídeo que hemos subido es una versión en vivo bastante más larga que la original, como suele suceder, que dura 5:47 minutos y es el primer track del lado B del LP original. Al final de esta reseña hemos colgado la original del disco.
Dire Straits (álbum)
Se trata del LP debut de la banda, que contaba con la siguiente formación:
- Mark Knopfler – voz, guitarras solistas y rítmicas
- David Knopfler – guitarra rítmica, coros
- John Illsley – bajo, coros
- Pick Withers – batería
Este álbum resultó todo un éxito en ventas. Alcanzó certificados de platino en varios países como: Canadá (4 veces platino), Francia, Alemania, Holanda, Nueva Zelanda, Suiza (2x), Reino Unido (2x), y Estados Unidos (2x).
Dire Strais, la banda
Fue fundada en Inglaterra en 1977 y estuvieron activos hasta 1988. Posteriormente se volvieron a reunir en 1991 hasta 1995. En total publicaron seis trabajos discográficos de estudio en su primera etapa y ninguno en su segunda. Además tres álbumes recopilatorios, cuatro en vivo, cuatro EP y 24 sencillos (singles). La banda ingreso al “Rock and Roll Hall of Fame” en el año 2018. Algo tarde en mi opinión.
Mark Knopfler
Nacido en Glasgow, Escocia, en 1949, se separa de “Dire Straits” en 1995, para continuar su carrera en solitario. Como solista ha publicado ocho discos, siendo el más reciente “Down the Road Wherever” (2018).
