El 18 de Marzo de 1967, el sencillo “Penny Lane” de los Beatles, alcanzaba la posición N.º 1 en la cartelera “Billboard 100” en los Estados Unidos. Era su 13ava canción que lo lograba.
El tema fue grabado entre el 29 de diciembre de 1966 y el 17 de enero de 1967, y el single fue publicado el 13 de febrero en EEUU y el 17 en el Reino Unido. El título de la canción es el del nombre de una calle cercana a la casa de Lennon, en Liverpool. Paul y John, de vez en cuando, se encontraban en el cruce de “Penny Lane” en el área de “Mossley Hill”, Liverpool, para tomar un autobús hacia el centro de la ciudad.
Magical Mistery Tour
“Penny Lane”, fue grabada en principio para que apareciera en el álbum “Sgt. Pepper”s Lonely Hearts Club Band“, pero finalmente fue publicada en “Magical Mystery Tour“.

En el año 2004, la revista “Rolling Stone” clasificó el tema en el número 456 en su lista de las “500 mejores canciones de todos los tiempos”. En el 2006, “Mojo”, clasificó la canción en el número 9 de “Las 101 mejores canciones de los Beatles”.
