Al Stewart – Year of the Cat (1976)

“Year of the Cat” de Al Stewart, se publicó como sencillo en Julio de 1976 en el Reino Unido y en Octubre del mismo año en los Estados Unidos, al mismo tiempo que se publicaba el LP con el mismo título. Hay que decir que la versión del disco era más larga que la del single. La que hemos colgado es la versión corta. Al final, pueden escuchar la “full”, en vivo, grabada en 1979.

Compuesta por el mismo Stewart y su amigo el teclista Peter Wood, fue grabada en los estudios de Abbey Road, Londres, en Enero de 1976, por el ingeniero de sonido Alan Parsons.

Éxito

En el mes de Marzo de 1977, alcanzó su posición máxima en la lista de la cartelera “Billboard 100”, consiguiendo el octavo lugar. Tuvo mejor suerte en Canadá en dónde fue tercera y en Holanda sexta.

“Year of the Cat” se ha mantenido como la grabación más popular de Stewart, siendo transmitida en forma regular en estaciones de rock clásico y folk rock.

Al Stewart

Nació en Glasgow, Escocia, el 5 de septiembre de 1945. Cantante, compositor y músico de folk-rock. Su padre, que fue Teniente de aviación de la reserva voluntaria de la Real Fuerza Aérea, falleció en un accidente aéreo durante un ejercicio de entrenamiento en 1945 antes que Al naciera.

Ha grabado un total de 25 discos de estudio. Stewart ha trabajado con Peter White, Alan Parsons, Jimmy Page, Richard Thompson, Rick Wakeman, Francis Monkman, Tori Amos y Tim Renwick, entre otros.

Origen de la canción

El origen tiene que ver con el zodíaco vietnamita que en 1976, cuando se compuso la canción, era el “Año del Gato” y con la película “Casablanca”. Fue el mismo Al, el que la contó en un concierto en el Royal Albert Hall el 16 de Mayo del 2015.

Anécdota

Durante 1997 tuve la suerte de estar todo el año en Múnich, Alemania, y esta canción estuvo sonando durante varios meses, a partir de Marzo, cuando alcanzó el máximo de popularidad. Recuerdo haber comprado el sencillo en un acetato de 45 rpm. Otra canción del “soundtrack” de mi vida.
