En un día como hoy, 17 de septiembre de 1971, “Sweet City Woman” del grupo “The Stampeders” (“Los Puntales”), empezaban su remontada hasta la octava posición en la lista “Billboard Hot 100”, desde el puesto 35. Estuvieron en esta lista un total de 16 semanas, y lograron vender más de un millón de copias certificadas.
“Sweet City Woman” fue publicada como un sencillo en Mayo de 1971, y también formaba parte del álbum “Against the Grain”, en el primer surco de la cara B. En el 2007, fue lanzado en formato CD, con dos “bonus tracks”, incluyendo una versión instrumental de este tema.
Dado que esta banda es canadiense, en su país, alcanzó el tope de las carteleras musicales en las categorías de “Top Singles”, “Adult Contemporary” y “Country Tracks”.
The Stampeders
Es un trío de rock canadiense, formado por Rich Dodson (guitarra, banjo, voz), Ronnie King (bajo, voz) y Kim Berly (batería, voz). Se formaron en Calgary, Alberta, en el año 1964 con el nombre de “The Rebounds”, compuesto inicialmente por cinco miembros. Cambiaron su nombre en 1965, y en 1966 se mudaron a Toronto. En 1968 ya eran un trío.
Después de “pegar” “Sweet City Woman” a nivel mundial, firmaron con el sello Polydor para su distribución en los EEUU. Posteriormente tuvieron otro éxito, versionando el tema “Hit The Road Jack”.
Durante su carrera publicaron un total de 16 álbumes y 25 singles, pero nunca superaron el éxito de la comercial “Sweet City Woman”. Su último trabajo discográfico fue “Live At The Mae Wilson”, en el 2011, de donde sale el vídeo que hemos puesto al inicio.
Se mantienen activos, hasta el día de hoy, y tan es así que están en medio de un “Tour 2021” canadiense, por las provincias de Saskatchewan y Ontario, que se inició el 7 de Agosto y finalizará el 15 de Noviembre.

De esta canción como con otros tantos éxitos, se hicieron varias versiones, de artistas como ” The Dave Clark Five”, Johnny Carver, Kyprios, Lawrence Welk y también una que los venezolanos deben recordar, por parte de la “primerísima” Mirla Castellanos, que el 31 de Marzo cumplió 80 años.
